So here’s something I didn’t know…Beowulf is COMPLETELY animated.
I know, some of you are saying, “Duh, who didn’t know that?” But, I honestly didn’t. And after the movie, at everyone’s pit stop at the bathroom, I heard 3 people talking about how they too had no clue it was animated. Commercials and movie posters can be very deceiving.
With a quick glance, it’s easy to see why this scene for the movie might make it hard to know that it was animated.
Then there were scenes like this, that made it very obvious.
Because I was disappointed about the movie being animated, I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I don’t think animation for humans works for full fledged movies yet. Like the Polar Express movie (oddly enough made by the same director) that was criticized so much for the characters looking like robots and having ‘soulless’ eyes. Animation works for fictional characters like Shrek or animals or cartoon looking people, but not real humans.
Overall, I’d say it was ok. I need to read the book again so I can give a better critique. It did keep me interested though, so that’s saying something. I think this review says it all.
“For all its visual sweep and propulsively violent action, this bloodthirsty rendition of the Old English epic can’t overcome the disadvantage of being enacted by digital waxworks rather than flesh-
